Physicians aver that the female genital needs to breathe in order to maintain its PH levels and prevent fungi and odour. And that’s why doctors advise going bare below when it’s bed time at the close of day.
“With BV, there is an increase in harmful bacteria and a decrease in good bacteria. BV is the most common va’ginal infection in women of child-bearing age.”

Part of the problem, says Family Physician, Dr. Grace Obong, is that during the day, women wear a variety of panties and tight outfits that hardly allow their privates to breathe. She says though it’s advisable and absolutely preferable to wear cotton panties, many women still opt for polyester panties, with the attendant heating up of the genital area while the day lasts.
And as for those who may not like to go to sleep without having pants on, Obong recommends wearing of boxers or pyjamas.


Bacterial va’ginosis
Talking about the need to maintain the PH levels of the va’gina, experts at womenshealth.gov say the va’gina normally has a balance of mostly “good” bacteria and fewer “harmful” bacteria. However, a condition, called bacterial va’ginosis, develops when the balance changes.

Obong says women with BV may have an abnormal va’ginal discharge with an unpleasant odour, while some women may complain of a strong fish-like odour, especially after se’x.
“The discharge can be white (milky) or gray. It may also be foamy or watery. Other symptoms may include burning when ur’inating, itching around the outside of the va’gina, and irritation; while some women with BV have no symptoms at all,” she adds.

Yeast infection
To further underscore the negative effects of wearing panties to bed, online portal, Medline Plus, also notes that too much moist in the female genital area can lead to va’ginal yeast infection, most commonly due to the fungus Candida albicans.
“Wearing tight underwear or a pair made from polyester or some other material that doesn’t breathe can lock in moisture and lead to yeast infections,” the warning goes.

Again, Certified Se’xuality Counselor, Evelyn Resh, says, “I do not recommend that women wear underwear to bed. Taking a break from underwear for the eight or so hours that you’re asleep gives you an opportunity to ‘air-out’ down there! Best to have an underwear-free zone while sleeping.”
And while yeast infection is not a se’xually transmitted illness, physicians say some men will develop symptoms such as itching and a rash on the penis after having se’xual contact with an infected partner.
The symptoms of yeast infection are as obnoxious as they are embarrassing, and they include abnormal va’ginal discharge, which ranges from a slightly watery, white discharge to a thick, white, chunky discharge; painful intercourse, painful ur’ination, redness and swelling of the vu’lva; and itching in the va’gina and the lab’ia. You may also feel burning sensation when you have yeast infection.

  • Chlamydia–Is a curable infection. Because chlamydia does not make most people sick, you can have the infection and not even know it. Symptoms of chlamydia include a mucus-like or pus-like vaginal discharge or pain when you urinate. But these symptoms can be mild. The bacteria can also infect your throat, if you’ve had oral physical contact with an infected partner.
  • A pregnant woman infected with chlamydia can transmit the infection to her infant during delivery. In the infant, the infection can cause the lining of the eye to become swollen and red (often called pink eye). If left untreated, chlamydia can move inside the body and cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which can be serious. Health care providers will prescribe an antibiotic to treat and cure chlamydia; however, penicillin, an antibiotic used to treat other infections, won’t cure chlamydia.
  • Herpes simplex virus (HSV)–Also called “genital herpes,” is caused by a virus. Genital herpes can be controlled, but not cured. Most women with genital herpes will have sores or lesions on the vulva, or on the outside of the vagina; sometimes these sores are found within the vagina, and can only be seen during a gynecological exam. The sores are often the source of pain for women infected with genital herpes. Your health care provider can recommend ways to control the symptoms of genital herpes.
  • • Human papilloma virus (HPV)–Is caused by a virus. It can be controlled, but not cured. Some women with HPV don’t have any symptoms; they don’t find out they have the virus until they get the results of their annual pap smear. Other women with HPV have genital warts, usually gray, white, or purple, that grow in their vagina or rectum, or on their vulva or groin. Genital warts can be painful. Some types of HPV are known to lead to certain types of cervical cancer and other cervical problems. Efforts are now underway to develop a vaccine to protect women from HPV, which could also prevent certain types of cervical cancer.
    • Noninfectious vaginitis–Is typically the result of an allergic reaction or an irritation to vaginal sprays, creams, and spermacides, or to soaps, detergents, and fabric softeners. Once you stop using the product that caused the reaction, your symptoms should go away. But, your health care provider may suggest a medicated cream to reduce the symptoms until the reaction goes away.

It started innocently. I accepted her friend request on Facebook even without consulting the gods. What followed next is what romantic Nigerian movies are made of. She liked half of my photos and posts, all in a day. She then poked me twice and inboxed me a long intro of herself.

I was tempted to block her or ignore her;like I do with so many of these random messages you get on social media. But there was something about her Facebook profile picture that caught my attention. It was a picture, in my humble opinion, of arguably;one of the finest Whiskeys in the world: Jack Daniels. Immediately curiosity had set in and I wanted to know more about her.

As per her intro, her name was Lynette, a third year Journalism student in one of the leading universities in the City. David Bungei a form four leaver who claims to have recruited students and lectured classes at Narok University.

NAKURU: A Form four leaver shocked the Employment and Labour Relation Court sitting in Nakuru when he revealed how he recruited students and lectured classes at the Narok University.

David Bungei further told Justice Stephen Radido that he also played a major role in supervising lecturers for a whole two full academic semesters before his services were irregularly terminated.

Bungei said he sat for his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) at Ndalat High in Uasin Ngishu in 1996 and attained a mean grade of C (plain).For 13 years, the father of one operated butchery in Narok town as well as tractor driver before he was temporarily employed by the University on May 2009.

Thirteen months later, in July 2010, because of his outstanding performance, the employer appointed him as a grounds attendant, a capacity he served in until April 2012.In a letter of appointment signed by Deputy Principal Administration and Finance, Prof Gerald Kimani, the 39-year-old was to receive a month salary of sh16, 374 and a house allowance of sh10, 325. 

A second letter signed by the University acting registrar (administration), Samson Kisirkoi, Bungei was deployed to Kilgoris learning Centre to assist in recruitment of students in the new Centre.

"This is to inform you that it has been decided that you be deployed to Kilgoris learning Centre to assist in recruitment of students in the new Centre. You will also be expected to be sending reports to the registrar academic affairs for necessary action," reads the internal memo, also copied to deputy principals.

Two years after, another internal memo was dispatched to his new work station, this time round from deputy principal academic affairs Prof Joseph Chacha, instructing the father of one and four other staff to forward a part-time teaching load to him.

"As a matter of agency forward to my office, the part-time teaching load (both internal and external part-time) for May-September 2012 session to enable appointment letters of part-time teaching to be done," reads the memo dated, October 2012. 

Further it explained, "Declaration of teaching workload form should be used in indicating the units taught. They should be duly filled and signed by chairperson of the departmental and the dean of school".

But like the way the miracle came, the employer terminated his services at its institution in June February, 2014.

His lawyer Joshia Oumo urged the court not only for his constitutional rights to be uphold but also to consider for the review for all the certificates he oversaw during his tenure. Justice Radido who is expected to deliver a judgment on the same in July 15, 2016 demanded to know from the University if indeed the hundreds of certificates issued to unsuspecting students had been recalled.

"Given that the University has realized that some certificates had been irregularly issued is there any attempt to recall such, by placing and advertisement in a local daily? He asked. Among the courses he assisted to have establish included, Master in Education Administration, Degree in Education, Diploma in Education, Degree in Business Management, Diploma in Community Development and Social work and several certificates.

"For the record, I sat and oversaw the recruitment of 21 lecturers for two academic years 2012/2013. Exams were marked and successful students awarded dully signed certificates after completion of their areas of specialization," said Bungei. While appearing before a disciplinary committee at the University's boardroom chaired by Deputy vice Chancellor Prof Simon Ole Seno, the panel noted with concern that the administration erred in sending Bungei to the learning Centre.

He was required to defend himself against charges of, improper guidance to students, unlawful and fraudulently taught and awarding of certificates as well as misuse of petty case.

The committee noted that Bungei, apart from allegedly charging sh10, 000 for certificates in Information Technology, the certificates awarded had his signature.

"Bungei was guilty of the offenses. However, the management was to blame owing to the appointment letter which gave him duties beyond his capability," the committee said in the verdict.

But in mitigation, Bungei admitted collecting fees but said he used the money because the then Deputy vice chancellor Samson Kisirkoi failed to approve the imprest he had requested.

"I used the money to accommodate lecturers, buy chairs and blackboards. But I recruited students hence did not neglect duty," he argued. However, reacting on the claims, Kisirkoi argued there was nothing wrong in the complainant ascending the employment ladder. "It is not impossible for a hardworking driver to become a company's chief Executive officer and the case at hand is not unique," said Kisirkoi when confronted.

Angered by his master's act, the 39-year-old went back to the institution and enrolled in Diploma in Public administration and now at his first pursuing a degree course on the same.
